Brain research is occurring at an amazing rate. Each year, we learn more about the incredible ways the adolescent brain unfolds. Current research informs our conversations about curriculum and program design and helps anchor our efforts to create a "developmentally responsive" educational experience for middle schoolers.

This is a summary of research on the developmental needs of children ages 10-15. It finds 7 key areas of attention that early adolescent educational programs should consider in order to provide a full and complete expereince for middle school students.

Teenage Brain: A Work in Progress - National Institute of Mental Health

This article reviews current research and concludes that adolescence is an extremely dynamic time for brain development, including a production of neurons similar to what occurs in early childhood. Its conclusions support the creation of educational programs that expose middle schoolers to a wide variety of ideas, skills, processes, and perspectives.
