Design week opened with our first morning meeting. Each day we gather in the great hall for announcements, quotes and daily overview. Today we presented the parameters of our Migration Challenge.
Each team was presented with a scenario that required urgent migration due to deforestation or climate change. Our outdoor course challenged groups to work together to cross mountain, desert or forest terrain while managing diminishing resouces and the challenges of travel. Later, students identified core strategies for successful migration - cooperation, resiliency and flexibility.
Seattle Master drummer Hank Voss was our first guest of the week. He brought rhythms and stories that have migrated from Africa and Brazil and wove an invocation for the week. His core question of "Do you love yourself?" asked students to think about their own starting points -- "it is the only way to start the journey," he said, "and the only way to play real music."
Monday afternoon groups began their weeklong investigation of Migration!
